Halloween Fun!

We had a wonderful day today. We played Halloween games, listened to spooky stories, did our Halloween art, made some soup for our lunch and had some treats afterwards! Our costumes were spooktacular and in total we raised €100 for Temple Street Children’s Hospital. We wish everyone a safe and happy Midterm Break. The school will re-open at the usual time on Monday November 5th  2012.

Cheesy Tomato Pasta

This time we decided on Cheesy Tomato Pasta for our savoury dish.

  • 2 tins of tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon of tomato purée
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 large onions
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • A pinch of salt
  • 2 packets of fresh penne pasta

We cut up the garlic and the onions.  We put a saucepan on a hob. We added the oil to the saucepan. When the oil was hot we sautéed the garlic and onions for 10minutes. We then added the two tins of tomatoes and the tomato purée. We allowed the mixture to simmer for about 1 hour. When the tomato sauce was almost done we added the pasta to a large saucepan of boiling water and allowed it to cook for about 10 minutes until it was soft. We drained the pasta using a colander. We served the pasta in big bowls with the tomato sauce. We put lots of cheese on top and it melted. We all loved this dish because it was nice and cheesy!

Christmas Treats

In preparation for our Christmas Concert we made some Christmas treats. We made chocolate rice cakes, rice krispie cakes and chocolate marshmallows.

For the chocolate rice cakes we melted 1 bar of chocolate, we spread the chocolate evenly onto the rice cakes and decorated them with smarties, chocolate buttons and other chocolate decorations. For the marshmallows we melted more chocolate and dipped the marshmallows in to the chocolate. Before the chocolate set we put a chocolate decoration on top of them. Finally, we made rice krispie cakes. We melted 2 bars of chocolate in a large bowl. We put a few cups of rice krispies into the chocolate and stirred for a minute or two. We then spooned them into paper cases and decorated them with smarties and other chocolate decorations. We put them in the fridge to set for about an hour. We really enjoyed sampling all these treats after our concert… and our families enjoyed tasting them too!

It was our turn to make something sweet so we decided on pancakes as a healthy treat!

  • 3 eggs
  • 250g of flour
  • 25g of butter
  • 2 cups of milk

The toppings we used were:

  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Grapes
  • Maple Syrup
  •  Caster Sugar
  • Lemon

We put all the ingredients into a large bowl. We mixed them for about 2 minutes using a hand blender. We put a frying pan on the hob and added some oil to it. When the oil was hot we used a ladle to put the mixture on it. We left them on for 2 minutes each side. When they were cooked we added out toppings of choice and enjoyed them with a glass of milk. They tasted gorgeous!

Pumpkin Soup

For Halloween we made Pumpkin soup. These were the ingredients

  • I large pumpkin – peeled and the flesh removed
  • 2 onions
  • 1 tablespoon of nutmeg
  • 2 litres of vegetable stock
  • A pinch of salt
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 250ml of cooking cream
  • 2 tablespoons of sunflower oil

We started by cutting the top of the pumpkin and removing the flesh. This was great fun! Our teacher cut the top off with a sharp knife and we scooped out the flesh. She then cut the pumpkin into segments and peeled it. We chopped up the pumpkin pieces into small cubes. Next we peeled the onions. They were so strong they made us cry!! We cut them up into small pieces. We then cut the garlic. It also had a very strong smell! Now all our ingredients were prepared so we started cooking. We put a large saucepan on the hob. We added the oil. When it had heated up we added the garlic, the onions and a pinch of salt. We let them cook for a few minutes. Next we added the vegetable stock and the pieces of pumpkin. We stirred them around in the mixture. We added the nutmeg and we let the mixture simmer on a low heat for 1 hour until all the vegetables were soft. Then we added the cream. Finally, we blended the mixture together using a hand blender. We

had the soup with some brown bread and butter. It was delicious. We had a little bit left over so we brought it home for our parents to try.

Strawberry Smoothies and Homemade Cookies

For this cookery lesson we made Strawberry Smoothies and decorated some homemade cookies. Here are the Ingredients for our Strawberry Smoothies:

  • A punnet of strawberries
  • 2 scoops of ice-cream
  • 2 scoops of natural yogurt
  • A banana
  • A cup of milk

We made the smoothies by cutting up the strawberries and the banana and putting them in the blender. We then added the milk, yogurt and ice cream. We blended them until the mixture was nice and creamy.

As we do not have an oven at school yet so our teacher baked some cookies at home and brought them in for us. The cookies were made in the shape of stars and gingerbread men. We decorated them using icing (we could choose any colour) and chocolate buttons and smarties.

  • Sun-dried  Tomatoes
  • Lettuce

Chocolate Biscuit Cake

To begin our Cookery Class in September we made a chocolate biscuit cake. Each time we cook we vary it from sweet to savoury dishes.

The ingredients for this cake were

  • Condensed Milk
  • 3 bars of Milk cooking chocolate
  • 2 bar of white cooking chocolate
  • 1 large pack of digestive biscuits

We made the cake by first melting the 3 bars of milk chocolate and 1 bar of white chocolate. We broke them into small pieces and put them into a large plastic bowl. We put it in the microwave for 2 and a half minutes. When it came out of the microwave we mixed it. We broke the digestive biscuit.   We then put the condensed milk into the bowl and mixed it quickly because it can get sticky. We added the biscuits to the mixture and mixed them altogether. We put mixture into a cake tin and we melted 1bar of white chocolate and spread it across the top of the cake. We then put the cake in the fridge for 2 hours.
